Oct 17, 2024

When it comes to roller coasters, we all know there are hundreds of them throughout the country of all shapes and sizes.

People travel all over to ride them. To places like Disney World in Orlando or Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey that boasts the tallest roller coaster in the world. Coasters keep getting bigger, taller, and faster, but sometimes it's the old wooden ones that are the most fun.

And if you're looking for one of those, you can find one of the best in the world at Lake Compounce.

The Boulder Dash roller coaster was ranked No. 2 in the U.S. for wooden coasters by the National Amusement Park Historical Association, which does an annual survey.

The coaster opened in 2000.

"At 4,725-feet long, buckle up and brace yourself for a fast-paced ride alongside Lake Compounce’s lush mountain terrain at a swift speed of over 60 MPH," the Lake Compounce website says. "Hold on tight, this wooden coaster has been upgraded with 580 feet of steel Titan Track. Get ready as it dives down huge drops, darts through the woods, and offers some serious airtime!"

The Boulder Dash isn't the only wooden coaster at the amusement park.

Wildcat, a wooden roller-coaster, is one of the oldest ones in the country. It was built in 1927 by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters.

The coaster reopened this spring after closing for a stretch for maintenance to its track by Gravity Group, which made the ride smoother.

The coaster is 2,746 feet long and has a 73-foot initial drop.

Lake Compounce amusement and water park is at 822 Lake Ave. in Bristol, CT.

The park website noted that, "Lake Compounce is the oldest, continuously-operating amusement park in North America, having its genesis more than 175 years ago in 1846."
